Improved Covariance Matrix Estimators for Weighted Analysis of Microarray Data
Empirical Bayes models have been shown to be powerful tools for identifying differentially expressed genes from gene expression microarray data. An example is the WAME model, where a global covariance matrix accounts for array-to-array correlations as well as differing variances between arrays. However, the existing method for estimating the covariance matrix is very computationally intensive a...
متن کاملAlternative HAC covariance matrix estimators with improved finite sample properties
HAC estimators are known to produce test statistics that reject too frequently in finite samples. One neglected reason comes from using the OLS residuals when constructing the HAC estimator. If the regression matrix contains high leverage points, such as from outliers, then the OLS residuals will be negatively biased. This reduces the variance of the OLS residuals and the HAC estimator takes th...
متن کاملAggregating Density Estimators: An Empirical Study
Density estimation methods based on aggregating several estimators are described and compared over several simulation models. We show that aggregation gives rise in general to better estimators than simple methods like histograms or kernel density estimators. We suggest three new simple algorithms which aggregate histograms and compare very well to all the existing methods.
متن کاملRobust regularized M-estimators of regression parameters and covariance matrix
High dimension low sample size (HD-LSS) data are becoming increasingly present in a variety of fields, including chemometrics and medical imaging. Especially problems with n < p (more variables than measurements) present a challenge to data analysts since the classical techniques can not be used. In this paper, we consider HD-LSS data in regression parameter and covariance matrix estimation pro...
متن کاملConsistency of robust portfolio estimators
It is a matter of common knowledge that traditional Markowitz optimization based on sample means and covariances performs poorly in practice. For this reason, diverse attempts were made to improve performance of portfolio optimization. In this paper, we investigate three popular portfolio selection models built upon classical meanvariance theory. The first model is an extension of the tradition...
